    • Under the principle of "one country, two systems" Hong Kong maintains a separate political and economic system from China. Except in military defense and foreign affairs, Hong Kong maintains its independent executive, legislative and judiciary powers.
  • Definition

    • In accordance with the joint declaration signed by China and the United Kingdom in 19 December 1984, the Government of China, by a letter dated 6 June 1997, indicated that ‘’the People’s Republic of China would resume the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong with effect from 1st July 1997 and that Hong Kong would become an Special Administrative Region of China, enjoying a high degree of autonomy, except in foreign and defense affairs, which are the responsibility of the Central People’s Republic of China’’. In a declaration dated 1 September 1989, the People’s Republic of China declared that ‘’with effect from 1 July 1997, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, will not and should not be a Non-Metropolitan Territory’’. However, it continues to be autonomous in the enactment of labour legislation and in the administration of labour affairs.
